Yosemite National Park protects a stretch of the central Sierra Nevada famous for its glacier-carved granite — El Capitan and Half Dome — and its waterfalls. The high country holds alpine meadows, lakes, and passes above 10,000 feet.
The steel cables on Half Dome's final pitch were installed in 1919, replacing a rope rigged in 1875 by Yosemite guide George Anderson — the first person ever to reach the summit.
