Van Sickle Bi-State Park sits right at the edge of South Lake Tahoe, straddling the California–Nevada line just behind the Heavenly gondola. We hiked the Barn Trail loop here as a family — a climb up through open Jeffrey-pine forest and huge granite boulders that the kids couldn't resist scrambling, past the trail's old signs and the state-line marker, with the blue of the lake opening up below.
The park is named for Henry Van Sickle, an 1852 pioneer who ran the first tollhouse on the Kingsbury Grade. His descendants donated the land in 1988, and it opened to the public in 2011.
