Mount Tamalpais rises 2,571 feet above the Golden Gate in Marin County, with redwood-filled canyons on one side and the open Marin Headlands and Pacific coast on the other. We spent our days here down in the old-growth redwoods of Muir Woods — the fern-lined creek, the trail winding among giant trunks and the hollow, fire-scarred trees — at the shaded foot of the mountain.
The mountain's famous "Sleeping Maiden" legend — a silhouette said to be a sleeping Miwok princess — isn't authentic native folklore at all. It was invented in 1921 by a playwright for a Mountain Play who couldn't find a real Miwok legend to use.
